Stop Forwarding Political Nonsense!

•October 10, 2008 • 2 Comments

I received an e-mail today…for the third time. The subject line says “comparison” and it is a contrast of the two presidential candidate’s views on the issues. (I use the word comparison loosely.) You have probably received this e-mail by now. (if not, you probably will) It is right-wing spin.

Now let me be very upfront…I DO NOT SUPPORT BARACK OBAMA…It has nothing to do with his muslim sounding name, the color of his skin, the country his father was from, etc., etc. It has everything to do with his foreign policy and his socialism-esque (I just made up a term) ideals on taxes and national healthcare.

Back to the e-mail…

The comparison of the two candidates is taken completely out of context. It gives you some information that is entirely accurate like whether the candidate served in the military (McCain – Yes; Obama – No) and how long each candidate has been in the senate, though it makes the assumption that once Senator Obama entered the presidential race he just stopped being a senator (McCain 22 years; Obama 173 Days {He was elected in 2004, 4 years ago}).

The e-mail says that Senator Obama supports gay marriage….well that’s not exactly how I heard it. He supports civil unions which actually make it where a gay couple pays taxes the same as a married couple and can visit their partner in the hospital, blah, blah, blah. By the way, Senator McCain also supports this idea. The real issue is that Senator McCain supports amending the Constitution to define marriage as “Between a Man and Woman”. Forgive me, but I am not sure where Senator Obama stands on this issue. I actually believe I have heard that he agrees with Senator McCain.

The biggest problem I have with this “forward” is the distortion of the Obama Tax Plan. The e-mail is full of half-truths about Senator Obama’s Plan. AGAIN I DO NOT SUPPORT BARACK OBAMA. All of the figures are taken completley out of context and meant to scare you. Even Senator McCain himself used these half-truths in the town hall debate this past week.

I read Senator Obama’s full tax plan today and I actually agree with MOST of it. CLICK HERE to read it for yourself (There is a PDF file at the bottom of the page. Don’t bother reading the comparison to Senator McCain’s plan because it just puts a Left Wing Spin on the whole thing). To see Senator McCain’s economic plan CLICK HERE. (Read The Briefing Paper)

One thing I don’t agree with is the fact that if you make a lot of money, if you are successful, you will be punished for it. Senator Obama says it is “Fair” for people that make over $250,000 per year to have to pay a higher percentage than everyone else. Well…life isn’t fair. Some people just make more money than others. Good for them. They worked hard for it. Some people work hard all their life and don’t make enormous amounts of money. Some people say that these people are miserable. Well, I know some reach people that are miserable as well. These people need to meet Jesus Christ. Send them this Plan of Salvation.

For the record, I think fair would be a flat tax for everyone. The same percentage rate for every working American. That’s it.

The point I am trying to make in this little rant is this. Educate yourself. Go directly to the source. Stop depending on hearsay and ignorant e-mails. DON’T BELIEVE IT UNTIL YOU SEE IT!

I am not going to discuss my views on Nationalized Health Care, Gay Marriage, etc., etc…unless you ask me for my opinion because frankly…I am tired of typing right now.

I’ll leave you with this. I will be voting for Senator John McCain….because…well…it’s my right to do so. Please do not make negative comments about this post. I will not post comments that have profanity. I will post educated discussion…if anyone actually reads this anyway.

Paid for by Robby Cantrell for President 2032

Also…I do not support the “Bail-Out”…ok

And this…if anyone can come up with a cool name for a new political party, let me know…the new party will be completely honest…no matter how many votes it costs…yeah I said it…What?

Check out this video of President Clinton. He is trying (although not very hard) to stay awake listening to Martin Luther King, Jr’s son deliver a message. He even looks at his watch toward the end of it. Love him or hate him, he was our President.

Cooper The Defective Dog: Episode One

•September 8, 2008 • 2 Comments

Our dog Cooper has some health issues that, frankly, I don’t think anyone would want me to describe. Let’s just say he has some problems with his digestive system. I just thought I would start sharing some of our daily routine with everyone.

In this episode we are giving Cooper his Metronidazole. He gets 300 mg, split into two doses a day. This is one of his two medications that he gets twice a day. The other medicine is a supplement for an enzyme deficiency that supports pancreatic function. It’s ridiculous for a dog to have as many problems as Cooper, but we love him anyway!

Barack Obama vs Ronald Reagan

•September 7, 2008 • Leave a Comment

If only that could happen.

I found a great website with great american speeches tonight. This one, by Ronald Reagan, was in the top 25. It was a campaign speech for Barry Goldwater that aired on October 27, 1964. It’s amazing how similar that time in our nation’s history is to what is going on in our country today. What’s not funny is that not much has changed. The same battles were being fought 44 years ago.

Set aside 30 minutes of your time and watch this amazing speech called

“A Time For Choosing”

Found at www.americanrhetoric.com

YouTube doesn’t have the entire speech, but here is an excerpt.

My Pedal Board

•August 17, 2008 • 3 Comments

Not much to write here…I had some friends ask what I was using in my live set-up…so here it is…

I use a Standard Fender Telecaster out to the chain you see above
1. Behringer T100 Tuner
2. Boss CS-3 Compression/Sustainer
3. Digitech Bad Monkey Overdrive
4. Boss PH-3 Phase Shifter
5. Line 6 Echo Park Delay (Tape, Digital and Analog Delay w/tap tempo)
6. Rocktron Short Timer Delay (Analog Delay) You can see where I have the time marked for different songs
Chain goes out to Vox AC-15

I also have a Fender PT-10 Tuner for my acoustic guitar (Epiphone AJ-SC18E) that goes out to a direct box that is mounted underneath my pedal board and then out to the mixer.

I actually built this board because I couldn’t find anything that I really liked. It has two levels (mainly because my power strip wouldn’t fit underneath unless I raised the upper level). My electric chain is powered by a Visual Sound One Spot adapter, except for the Echo Park which has to have it’s own power supply. I use the Line 6 DC-1 adapter that is recommended by the company.

Actor Jon Voight In The Washington Times

•August 12, 2008 • 1 Comment

I just flipped over to Glenn Beck on CNN Headline News and saw actor Jon Voight. I have heard him speak out before. I don’t know that I would ever agree with him about everything, but he sure has Obama nailed. It is nice to know that there are real people in Hollywood that are not afraid to speak out against the Nut-Job Hollywood Liberals that will get behind anything that is anti-republican, even if they really don’t know anything about a candidate.

If you haven’t read it, you can read it HERE

And hurry up. The Washington Times will probably take it down soon :) The NY Times wouldn’t even have printed it.

An Inconvenient History? (part one)

•August 3, 2008 • Leave a Comment

(Lots of great video links in this one…click on the bold words for the vids)

Last night I saw a commercial that I have seen several times in the last few weeks. It was a commercial for Hanes t-shirts. Most people would recognize the gentlemen in the commercial as Michael Jordan and Charlie Sheen. However, neither person’s name is mentioned. Charlie calls Michael “MJ” but that’s it. This made me think a little. How many people out there have no idea who either one of these guys are? I know this may seem ridiculous to most of us, but to some people the commercial would seem, in a way, silly. You might get a lot of….hmmmm…I don’t get it. Is the commercial a little arrogant. (As I write, the commercial is on…) The commercial actually shows how in awe, even another celebrity can be of Michael Jordan. Charlie is so desperate, just to hang out with “MJ”, that he throws his phone into his car, hoping Michael would get his number and give him a call sometime…which he will not.

Now…here’s what I remember about these two guys. Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player to ever play the game….period. Six Championships. Countless other accolades and records. I don’t care what kids these days are saying about LeBron James…there is no comparison. He might be this generation’s MJ but he is NOT MJ. He tried playing baseball once. (I actually witnessed him hit a home run in a minor league game in Chattanooga. He just never looked right in a baseball uniform.) He starred in Space Jam and in those great McDonald’s commercials with Larry Bird. He was NIKE! He was on THE Dream Team. He likes to play golf and gamble. I could go on and on.

Charlie Sheen starred in some great movies. Red Dawn, Platoon, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (not really a starring role, but quite funny), Wall Street, Young Guns, Eight Men Out, Navy Seals, Men At Work, Cadence (AWESOME), The Rookie, Hot Shots one and part deaux (Stupid, but nonetheless), and two of my favorite movies of all time; Major League and The Three Musketeers. He also currently owns the sitcom world (or what’s left of it anyway) on Two and a Half Men on CBS. One of my favorite shows…ever.

What are these two guys going to be remembered for? MJ in Hanes commercials and Charlie Sheen as a drunk and failure at marriage. It’s really a shame. These guys have had great careers and are going to be remembered for what they are doing currently. I don’t care as much about how we remember Sheen, but we can’t let MJ go out like that…In his underwear?!?!?

A memorable line from Batman Begins comes to mind. It’s said about three different times by different actors/actresses. You know… ”It’s not who you are underneath, but what you do that defines you.”

I would take this one step further and say, “It’s what you do LAST that defines who you are.”

I think a lot of people spend a great deal of their lives living in the past. Your history is very important but unfortunately, or in some cases fortunately, will be forgotten and taken over by what you are doing right now. The best way to secure that your past will be forgotten, or not forgotten, is to change your “now”.

This may sound a little confusing, but let me see if I can get my point across. If your past was cruddy, and you don’t want people to remember you as a chump, you are the only one who can change that. If you have been a success in your past, you have an even bigger challenge…keeping your reputation in tact. I don’t think we should ever try to forget a troubled past. I think we are to learn from it and take wisdom from our experiences, good or bad.

Make people remember you for what you are doing now. Live your life with the love of Jesus Christ. Show love to everyone. Spread the love that Jesus came to earth to teach us about. Share the love and life lessons of Jesus. This will change your history and your “now”.

Next….

An Inconvenient History? (part two) will focus on Brett Favre, The Green Bay Packers, and how ridiculous that whole situation has become. I will also discuss some of our history that makes teenagers today say, “Huh, what’s that?” Really sad stuff.

Last night my wife and I found the tiny little creature below, on our deck…

When I was a kid, I would find the exoskeleton of these little guys on pine trees all the time. But I have never seen one in the process of “coming out of its shell”…so to speak. Apparently it is called a cicada. They are actually kind of pretty. I won’t go into great detail about their lives. You can read about it at the Wikipedia site by clicking here.

They come in all sorts of colors and only live about 30 days. Apparently they first live underground and then come out to shed their skin and just be pretty for about a month. Anyway, the Wikipedia info is really neat and their is a time series of photos of what the molting process looks like.

I thought all of this was cool and that it is just another example of how God can use the smallest creature to amaze us all. God can take something that begins as an ugly little thing, and make it beautiful. Something to think about!

God Bless!

Most Creative Albums Of 2008 (So Far) v.1

•June 26, 2008 • Leave a Comment

I love creativity. Especially when it comes in music form. Here is my first installment of what I believe to be some of the most creative albums this year.

Album: Viva la Vida
Artist: Coldplay
Favorite Song: Violet Hill
Music: 5
Lyrics: 4.5
Mix: 3.5
Artistry: 5
Listening Pleasure: 4
My Rating: 4.4
all ratings on a five point scale

This album is very interesting. Great music + strong lyrics always makes for a great listening experience. The unique, Coldplay style, instrumentation has been trned up a notch. It is not “Radio Friendly” as some may say, although it does have tracks that make great singles. You have no doubt heard the first “iTunes ready” single (whether you knew it or not) and title track, Viva la Vida, from the iTunes tv spots. It is a great tune, but my favorite track is the current single, Violet Hill. I love the beat and the vocal is phenomenal. Cool video as well. A great deal of the album has a Pink Floyd feel. My only displeasure with the whole album is the final mix. I’m no expert, but at times it is difficult to understand the vocal. You may have to listen to some of the tracks a few times to really get the lyric content. It also has a little too much highs in the mix for my taste. Kind of roars at times. All in all, I give it two big thumbs up. Must have for fans of true artistry.

Hilarious!!!

Bastogne

•June 17, 2008 • Leave a Comment

In an earlier post (About 4 posts down from here) I included lyrics to a song I had written a few years ago called Bastogne. It is my tribute to the soldiers of World War II and the Battle at Bastogne, France (Dec 1944 – Jan 1945) during the famous “Battle of the Bulge”

I will probably never get to have a studio recording of this but I really wanted to share it with someone. I did a quick video recording of the song tonight. I hope you like it.

So……Tetanus Shot Anyone?

•June 11, 2008 • Leave a Comment

I have been working, in my free time, for the last couple of months, remodeling the sun porch and deck on the back of my house. It has been a lot of work, but it will be worth it in the end. I am going to save the full story (With pictures and everything YEA!) for another date when the full process is complete. But I had to tell this story today/tonight.

I have spent the last couple of days cleaning up all of the debris and scraps from the demolition/building process. Yesterday I spent about four hours sawing boards into less than six foot sections so that I can haul it all off to the landfill (another blog all in itself). Explanation…my truck bed is six feet long, the old deck planks are about 12 feet long.

Anyway…

Today I was loading the waste (with the help of a dandy little cart my neighbor, Ms. Betty, let me borrow) into my truck for the haul away. I reached down for a board and when I braced myself, with my foot, I didn’t realize I was standing on a nail that was sticking out of another board. When I lifted up, my weight pushed down and the nail went, very rapidly I might add, through the soul of my boot and into the ball of my foot. (Steel toed, not steel souled, next purchase)

I have never felt anything like this before. OWWWW expletive (Sorry. Just being honest) OWWW Darn It! (Caught myself) It felt like someone had shoved a pencil into my foot….and twisted it. Like some sort of torture.

But I did not cry. Too mad to do that. I kept on working and didn’t look at the wound for another three hours. That’s right…I’m awesome….Or stupid…

When I inspected my foot later, I found a bloody sock and what looks like a piece of my boot inside the wound. I know this sounds graphic and that is why I am not sharing any photos (really only because I haven’t taken any).

Also….

Yesterday I was wearing tennis shoes (for the first time on this project) and I dropped one of the boards on the same foot. It connected right below the toenails on my second and third toes. Prolly gonna lose a nail.

Confucious say….

Man should do no dirty work….IF he can pay someone else. Then he never risk losing foot.

Well off to make my shoulder sore for two days.

Reminder…

If you haven’t had a tetanus shot in the last ten years, you should really look into that…I’m just saying….

Stone Mountain, GA

•June 6, 2008 • 3 Comments

June 4, 2008

Nicole and I took a trip to Stone Mountain to have a fun-filled day of sight-seeing. I have been to the big rock many times, but this was Nicole’s first trip. I was actually really excited about going back because they have this new attraction called “Sky Hike”. But guess what? To our dismay it was closed to film a commercial. So our visit had not gotten off to a good start. But we carried on.

We first went to ride the train that circles the mountain, but we were going to have to wait about thirty minutes…so we ventured on to the 4D Tall Tales Movie Extravaganza. It was really neat. The movie is 3D. The fourth “D” is that you have your senses tickled a little bit. You feel vibrations from bumping into things, feel wind blow, get wet, and even smell certain things. Skunk and hot coccoa…need I say more.

After the movie we hiked back to the train. We made it just in time to find out that we would not get to take part in this attraction either. There was a brush fire on the opposite side of the mountain that took the train out of commission. So we played putt putt instead.

After whpping Nicole 17 holes to 1 (I know I’m a jerk), we decided to eat our picnic dinner and head over to the paddle boats.

As you can see we were really excited about this. Just being on the water made it feel a lot cooler out there.

After the paddle boats we rode the skylift to the top of the mountain.

We explored the mountain top for a while, and much to Nicole’s dismay, had to get back on the skylift to go back down. Wasn’t so bad the second time. Little freaked out going up. ;)

After a long day of mostly walking (seemed like it anyway), we grabbed our blanket and found a spot to watch the 25th Anniversary Lasershow Spectacular (Fireworks Too).

We cooled off with some dippin’ dots and enjoyed the show. It was a little redneck but really cool nonetheless. We had a great time! It was so nice to finally get away, even if only for one day, and just spend some quality time together.

Memorial Day

•May 25, 2008 • 3 Comments

I am a huge history “buff”, I guess you would call it. And I am particularly interested in The Civil War and World War II.  A few years ago, a friend of mine let me borrow the DVD set of Band Of Brothers. This was a phenomenal mini-series that aired on HBO and then later on The History Channel (Where I have since watched it again). It was produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg, and is a great tribute to the men who fought and died in World War II. One of the episodes was called Bastogne. Bastogne was a little French town that we fought the Germans over during the coldest winter of the war. It was a long and bloody battle. There are really no words to describe it, but the images of that episode really convey the desparity of the situation.

Tonight, I found a song that I wrote after watching that particular episode. I would like to share it with you all, in honor of the brave men and women who have given their lives so that we may be free to live and do as we please. This is probably my favorite song that I have ever written, and I hope that one day, when I have some money to burn, I can record it.

Bastogne

Robby Cantrell

Verse

As I lie here

The snowflakes are falling to the ground

And I think about my family gathered ‘round

The dinner table

My mom and dad and brothers sittin’ there

And the smell of Sunday supper in the air

And all seems right

Until the bombs light up the night

In Bastogne

Verse

I’m so scared

My nerves of steel are slowly wearin’ thin

And the enemy is quickly closing in

But I hold on

I’ll make it through just one more deadly night

I know I cannot give up on this fight

Right now we are surrounded

But tomorrow I won’t be found

In Bastogne

Chorus

Bastogne  -  Your memory just won’t leave me alone

Bastogne  -   The sights and sounds continue to hold on

Bastogne

I never will forget you

And I thank God that I got through

Bastogne

Verse

We move on

Without our fallen brothers left behind

But our time together etched upon my mind

And I cry

As I mourn for all their loved ones back at home

And I keep fighting for their weary souls

So they haven’t died in vain

In the woods where they were slain

In Bastogne

Thanks for reading!

Candy & Ink Pens

•May 8, 2008 • 2 Comments

Haven’t you always wanted to know how to give away 30 lbs of candy and 2000 ink pens in one hour flat? Let me tell you how to do that.

First, gather 30 lbs of candy and 2000 ink pens. For the candy, Wal-Mart is a good location to begin. For the pens, you will probably want to get some with your company logo printed on the side. (If that is your thing)

Second, go here

This is what it looks like when 2000 plus seniors gather for a day of giveaway hoarding excitement. Many salesman go to merchandise shows where they are able to see what’s new in merchandise related to whatever business they are involved with. At one time I made a trip to the Professional Golf Association Merchandise Show in Orlando, FL to do this very thing. I will never do that again.

These days I am on the other side of that looking glass, in a totally different industry. I spend a lot of time with senior citizens. I work for a company that provides in-home care for senior citizens who cannot perform everyday tasks on their own. Stuff most people take for granted, like doing your laundry or preparing a meal. I handle networking and marketing.

Today I was privileged to attend an event called “May Day”. By the end of the first hour, that’s what I was screaming. I compare it to rabid dogs descending on a dead animal carcass.

I have never been more shocked by “The Greatest Generation” than I was today. Now, don’t get me wrong, I love our grandparents, but this was crazy.

There was no opportunity to tell people about our business. I just tried to get our brochures and pens in as many hands as possible and say, “Just take the candy and go, PLEASE!” I could not believe how some of these people acted over 10 cent candy.

Honestly, it was probably about 10% of the people that were selfish. But, it was just a real treat to watch. These people would stick their entire paw down into the candy bowl and pull out a good 20 or 30 pieces of assorted candy. Why??? People amaze me. It was like they had never seen it before. Now they will probably take it home and put it in a candy dish for their grandkids to enjoy five years from now. It’s not even the kind that you really want. You only eat it out of desperation or boredom. “Oh, hey, a piece of once hard, now gooey strawberry candy….Yum.”

I haven’t even mentioned the pens, yet. What I tried to do was give each person one pen and one brochure, just trying to make them last. People would actually reach across my table and try to grab extras from my hand. I actually had to tell one woman, “I’m sorry I can’t give you five. You have already been by my table twice. Leave some for the others.”

As you may have figured out, I gave away 30 lbs of candy and 2000 pens between 8:30 am and 9:30 am. Todays blog is a little fragmented because I am still a little frazzled by the events of this morning. I failed to mention the lighter side of the extravaganza….the contests.

A “Do The Twist” Contest
A Hula Hoop Contest
A “Hog Calling” Contest

All very enjoyable. Old people are funny. I love my job.

A side note: Not all seniors are ravenous vultures. Most are quite pleasant and a joy to be around. But, you could do a pretty good sociological study at “May Day” What an unusual demographic picture?
