Bill Clinton Is Funny

Check out this video of President Clinton. He is trying (although not very hard) to stay awake listening to Martin Luther King, Jr’s son deliver a message. He even looks at his watch toward the end of it. Love him or hate him, he was our President.

Great Story!

I found this story on my new friend Steve Wright’s Blog. It is a great survival story about a father and son lost at sea. Click on the link below.

Cooper The Defective Dog: Episode One

•September 8, 2008 • 2 Comments

Our dog Cooper has some health issues that, frankly, I don’t think anyone would want me to describe. Let’s just say he has some problems with his digestive system. I just thought I would start sharing some of our daily routine with everyone.

In this episode we are giving Cooper his Metronidazole. He gets 300 mg, split into two doses a day. This is one of his two medications that he gets twice a day. The other medicine is a supplement for an enzyme deficiency that supports pancreatic function. It’s ridiculous for a dog to have as many problems as Cooper, but we love him anyway!

10:05 AM Found out that tuition had gone up $21 per credit hour (not good)
10:08 AM Found out my student loan is $452 dollars short (would have been good to know when I applied for my student loan, refer to previous statement, thanks JSU!)
10:09 AM Discovered that on-line classes are more expensive than in-class classes (do not understand that)
10:15 AM Found out my books for school will be $300+ (not good with two previous statements)
10:22 AM Drove back home to get my truck tag receipt so that I could….
11:00 AM ….pick up my parking decal ($25 in 2008, $10 in 1998 )

12:05 PM – 1:05 PM Played nine holes of golf in one hour (beat the rain)

An Inconvenient History? (part one)

(Lots of great video links in this one…click on the bold words for the vids)

Last night I saw a commercial that I have seen several times in the last few weeks. It was a commercial for Hanes t-shirts. Most people would recognize the gentlemen in the commercial as Michael Jordan and Charlie Sheen. However, neither person’s name is mentioned. Charlie calls Michael “MJ” but that’s it. This made me think a little. How many people out there have no idea who either one of these guys are? I know this may seem ridiculous to most of us, but to some people the commercial would seem, in a way, silly. You might get a lot of….hmmmm…I don’t get it. Is the commercial a little arrogant. (As I write, the commercial is on…) The commercial actually shows how in awe, even another celebrity can be of Michael Jordan. Charlie is so desperate, just to hang out with “MJ”, that he throws his phone into his car, hoping Michael would get his number and give him a call sometime…which he will not.

Now…here’s what I remember about these two guys. Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player to ever play the game….period. Six Championships. Countless other accolades and records. I don’t care what kids these days are saying about LeBron James…there is no comparison. He might be this generation’s MJ but he is NOT MJ. He tried playing baseball once. (I actually witnessed him hit a home run in a minor league game in Chattanooga. He just never looked right in a baseball uniform.) He starred in Space Jam and in those great McDonald’s commercials with Larry Bird. He was NIKE! He was on THE Dream Team. He likes to play golf and gamble. I could go on and on.

Charlie Sheen starred in some great movies. Red Dawn, Platoon, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (not really a starring role, but quite funny), Wall Street, Young Guns, Eight Men Out, Navy Seals, Men At Work, Cadence (AWESOME), The Rookie, Hot Shots one and part deaux (Stupid, but nonetheless), and two of my favorite movies of all time; Major League and The Three Musketeers. He also currently owns the sitcom world (or what’s left of it anyway) on Two and a Half Men on CBS. One of my favorite shows…ever.

What are these two guys going to be remembered for? MJ in Hanes commercials and Charlie Sheen as a drunk and failure at marriage. It’s really a shame. These guys have had great careers and are going to be remembered for what they are doing currently. I don’t care as much about how we remember Sheen, but we can’t let MJ go out like that…In his underwear?!?!?

A memorable line from Batman Begins comes to mind. It’s said about three different times by different actors/actresses. You know… ”It’s not who you are underneath, but what you do that defines you.”

I would take this one step further and say, “It’s what you do LAST that defines who you are.”

I think a lot of people spend a great deal of their lives living in the past. Your history is very important but unfortunately, or in some cases fortunately, will be forgotten and taken over by what you are doing right now. The best way to secure that your past will be forgotten, or not forgotten, is to change your “now”.

This may sound a little confusing, but let me see if I can get my point across. If your past was cruddy, and you don’t want people to remember you as a chump, you are the only one who can change that. If you have been a success in your past, you have an even bigger challenge…keeping your reputation in tact. I don’t think we should ever try to forget a troubled past. I think we are to learn from it and take wisdom from our experiences, good or bad.

Make people remember you for what you are doing now. Live your life with the love of Jesus Christ. Show love to everyone. Spread the love that Jesus came to earth to teach us about. Share the love and life lessons of Jesus. This will change your history and your “now”.

Next….

An Inconvenient History? (part two) will focus on Brett Favre, The Green Bay Packers, and how ridiculous that whole situation has become. I will also discuss some of our history that makes teenagers today say, “Huh, what’s that?” Really sad stuff.

Last night my wife and I found the tiny little creature below, on our deck…

When I was a kid, I would find the exoskeleton of these little guys on pine trees all the time. But I have never seen one in the process of “coming out of its shell”…so to speak. Apparently it is called a cicada. They are actually kind of pretty. I won’t go into great detail about their lives. You can read about it at the Wikipedia site by clicking here.

They come in all sorts of colors and only live about 30 days. Apparently they first live underground and then come out to shed their skin and just be pretty for about a month. Anyway, the Wikipedia info is really neat and their is a time series of photos of what the molting process looks like.

I thought all of this was cool and that it is just another example of how God can use the smallest creature to amaze us all. God can take something that begins as an ugly little thing, and make it beautiful. Something to think about!

God Bless!

Bastogne

•June 17, 2008 • Leave a Comment

In an earlier post (About 4 posts down from here) I included lyrics to a song I had written a few years ago called Bastogne. It is my tribute to the soldiers of World War II and the Battle at Bastogne, France (Dec 1944 – Jan 1945) during the famous “Battle of the Bulge”

I will probably never get to have a studio recording of this but I really wanted to share it with someone. I did a quick video recording of the song tonight. I hope you like it.

So……Tetanus Shot Anyone?

•June 11, 2008 • Leave a Comment

I have been working, in my free time, for the last couple of months, remodeling the sun porch and deck on the back of my house. It has been a lot of work, but it will be worth it in the end. I am going to save the full story (With pictures and everything YEA!) for another date when the full process is complete. But I had to tell this story today/tonight.

I have spent the last couple of days cleaning up all of the debris and scraps from the demolition/building process. Yesterday I spent about four hours sawing boards into less than six foot sections so that I can haul it all off to the landfill (another blog all in itself). Explanation…my truck bed is six feet long, the old deck planks are about 12 feet long.

Anyway…

Today I was loading the waste (with the help of a dandy little cart my neighbor, Ms. Betty, let me borrow) into my truck for the haul away. I reached down for a board and when I braced myself, with my foot, I didn’t realize I was standing on a nail that was sticking out of another board. When I lifted up, my weight pushed down and the nail went, very rapidly I might add, through the soul of my boot and into the ball of my foot. (Steel toed, not steel souled, next purchase)

I have never felt anything like this before. OWWWW expletive (Sorry. Just being honest) OWWW Darn It! (Caught myself) It felt like someone had shoved a pencil into my foot….and twisted it. Like some sort of torture.

But I did not cry. Too mad to do that. I kept on working and didn’t look at the wound for another three hours. That’s right…I’m awesome….Or stupid…

When I inspected my foot later, I found a bloody sock and what looks like a piece of my boot inside the wound. I know this sounds graphic and that is why I am not sharing any photos (really only because I haven’t taken any).

Also….

Yesterday I was wearing tennis shoes (for the first time on this project) and I dropped one of the boards on the same foot. It connected right below the toenails on my second and third toes. Prolly gonna lose a nail.

Confucious say….

Man should do no dirty work….IF he can pay someone else. Then he never risk losing foot.

Well off to make my shoulder sore for two days.

Reminder…

If you haven’t had a tetanus shot in the last ten years, you should really look into that…I’m just saying….

Stone Mountain, GA

•June 6, 2008 • 3 Comments

June 4, 2008

Nicole and I took a trip to Stone Mountain to have a fun-filled day of sight-seeing. I have been to the big rock many times, but this was Nicole’s first trip. I was actually really excited about going back because they have this new attraction called “Sky Hike”. But guess what? To our dismay it was closed to film a commercial. So our visit had not gotten off to a good start. But we carried on.

We first went to ride the train that circles the mountain, but we were going to have to wait about thirty minutes…so we ventured on to the 4D Tall Tales Movie Extravaganza. It was really neat. The movie is 3D. The fourth “D” is that you have your senses tickled a little bit. You feel vibrations from bumping into things, feel wind blow, get wet, and even smell certain things. Skunk and hot coccoa…need I say more.

After the movie we hiked back to the train. We made it just in time to find out that we would not get to take part in this attraction either. There was a brush fire on the opposite side of the mountain that took the train out of commission. So we played putt putt instead.

After whpping Nicole 17 holes to 1 (I know I’m a jerk), we decided to eat our picnic dinner and head over to the paddle boats.

As you can see we were really excited about this. Just being on the water made it feel a lot cooler out there.

After the paddle boats we rode the skylift to the top of the mountain.

We explored the mountain top for a while, and much to Nicole’s dismay, had to get back on the skylift to go back down. Wasn’t so bad the second time. Little freaked out going up. 😉

After a long day of mostly walking (seemed like it anyway), we grabbed our blanket and found a spot to watch the 25th Anniversary Lasershow Spectacular (Fireworks Too).

We cooled off with some dippin’ dots and enjoyed the show. It was a little redneck but really cool nonetheless. We had a great time! It was so nice to finally get away, even if only for one day, and just spend some quality time together.

Memorial Day

I am a huge history “buff”, I guess you would call it. And I am particularly interested in The Civil War and World War II.  A few years ago, a friend of mine let me borrow the DVD set of Band Of Brothers. This was a phenomenal mini-series that aired on HBO and then later on The History Channel (Where I have since watched it again). It was produced by Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg, and is a great tribute to the men who fought and died in World War II. One of the episodes was called Bastogne. Bastogne was a little French town that we fought the Germans over during the coldest winter of the war. It was a long and bloody battle. There are really no words to describe it, but the images of that episode really convey the desparity of the situation.

Tonight, I found a song that I wrote after watching that particular episode. I would like to share it with you all, in honor of the brave men and women who have given their lives so that we may be free to live and do as we please. This is probably my favorite song that I have ever written, and I hope that one day, when I have some money to burn, I can record it.

Bastogne

Robby Cantrell

Verse

As I lie here

The snowflakes are falling to the ground

And I think about my family gathered ‘round

The dinner table

My mom and dad and brothers sittin’ there

And the smell of Sunday supper in the air

And all seems right

Until the bombs light up the night

In Bastogne

Verse

I’m so scared

My nerves of steel are slowly wearin’ thin

And the enemy is quickly closing in

But I hold on

I’ll make it through just one more deadly night

I know I cannot give up on this fight

Right now we are surrounded

But tomorrow I won’t be found

In Bastogne

Chorus

Bastogne    Your memory just won’t leave me alone

Bastogne     The sights and sounds continue to hold on

Bastogne

I never will forget you

And I thank God that I got through

Bastogne

Verse

We move on

Without our fallen brothers left behind

But our time together etched upon my mind

And I cry

As I mourn for all their loved ones back at home

And I keep fighting for their weary souls

So they haven’t died in vain

In the woods where they were slain

In Bastogne

Thanks for reading!

The following information will be in chronologically reverse order…

Tuesday, April 22 10:30 PM

Josh came over to my house to work on some band “stuff” when I discovered a good bit of water bubbling up through my driveway. When he first arrived at my house, there was a small amount of wetness around his car. I honestly thought he had just taken his car through a carwash. This may sound crazy. Why would his car still have that much water on it by the time he arrived at my home? But the idea that water was bubbling up through the concrete seemed even more ridiculous. At about 9:30, Josh walked out to his car and the amount of water had grown quite a bit. I walked out to look at the area and I could see water coming up through one of the cracks in the concrete. Long story shortened a little. I called Jacksoville Water Works who came out and said that they couldn’t do anything until morning. I woke up to a lake in my front yard. It was amazing. But even more amazing is the fact that this has happened before. Ny neighbor told me that the water main pipes had burst about seven years ago in the exact same spot. (I have lived in this home for about three years) Way to go Jax Water Works….nice!

Monday, April 21 About 9:30 PM

Joel and I got to see Switchfoot for the first time tonight. They were incredible! I believe Jon Foreman may be about the best frontman in the biz. I rank this show 2nd in my list of “Most Amazing Shows I Have Witnessed In Person List” (New list soon). Only Garth Brooks has topped this experience. Don’t laugh. He is amazing live! Wildhorse Saloon is a great venue as well. The sound was perfect. Jars of Clay and Third Day were great, but I have seen them before. I have never seen a 45 minute set like this before.

Sunday, April 20 Who Cares What Time? This Was Crazy!

I had a scope stuck down my throat to examine my vocal chords. They are fine. My concern is gone. Nuff said here. You can read more about it on the four days late blog. I will post a video before the weekend is over.

Bye for now.

Radio, Press Kits and……Goats?

•April 17, 2008 • Leave a Comment

I have spent most of my evening preparing for this weekend’s trip to Nashville for The Gospel Music Association Music Week.  (Listening to Shiver by Coldplay) Four Days Late will be traveling to Nash Vegas to meet with radio station managers from across the country in support of our radio single Glorious King. We also have a planning session scheduled with our booking agent. It is going to be a busy weekend. I am very excited about all of this. I won’t be able to sleep Friday night. This will be our third time at GMA and it has become one of my favorite times of the year. This year is going to have some added good times. Joel and I will be going to a concert Monday night that should be, in a word, amazing!!! We are going to get to see a “Fall Tour Preview” with three of my favorite groups: Robert Randolph and The Family Band, Third Day and Switchfoot. Awesome!

Tonight, I opened 120 copies of our album to stuff into press kits. When I say opened, I mean ripped the wrapping off of them. Very time consuming. But not as time consuming as the second leg of the “Press Kit Stuff” that will take place Friday night. I can’t wait……

I also spent a good bit of time packaging “Thank You for Adding Glorious King” cds to send to radio stations across the country. (Now listening to Replace Me by Family Force 5) It is wild to know that our song is being played in California, Connecticut, Texas, Missouri, Wisconsin, Illinois and NOT Alabama…yet. Soon…very soon.

Also…today I saw this…

I just had to snap a pic. I thought it was hilarious! What a life! Lounging in the warm Alabama sun in the back of a scrapped truck bed. Rich! I then had a terrible flashback to my childhood….One of my most vivid memories from my prepubescent days is a horrifying incident with one of these mongrels at “Trade Day” in Collinsville, AL. Some of you know what an incredible shopping experience you can have there. You can even buy a goat. Anyway, I saw a cute little billiy goat in a tiny little cage. I thought, “Oh, how cute. I would like to pet him. I’ll just pat his little nose.” I stuck my finger into his living space and he BIT me! Jerk! That’s the last time I ever showed a goat any love. (Now listening to I Know Why by Sheryl Crow)

A Work In Progress

•April 15, 2008 • Leave a Comment

Here’s a song I am working on. I will repost periodically and you can see the “progress”

Verse
The sun is shining brighter – there’s a new song in the air
My heart is beating faster – You can take me anywhere
I never knew living could make me feel this way

Chorus
Today I follow You
Today I live for You
I found what I was looking for
My fear has been replaced
I’ve changed my life life today…today

Verse
Impatiently waiting for You – to take me from this place
There’s a hunger yearning – to see You face to face
I never knew breathing could make me feel this way

Chorus
Today I follow You
Today I live for You
Today I follow You
Today I follow You
I found what I was looking for
My fear has been replaced
I’ve changed my life life today…today

Bridge/Breakdown
I never knew living could make me feel this way
I never knew breathing could make me feel this way

Stupid People v.2

Today I went into a service station to purchase an ice cold Mountain Dew.  A gentlemen in front of me, who shall remain nameless (I don’t know his name) purchased an Ice Cold Coke(TM).  He made his purchase and left.  I made my purchase (without any exchange of words with the cashier) and walked out the door.  As I walked toward my car, I passed by the redneck (ahem) gentlemen’s dilapidated Chevy Truck and glanced inside.  To my amazement (I don’t really know why I was amazed) he was topping off a bottle of Jack Daniel’s with his newly purchased Ice Cold Coke(TM).  Then he drove away….5th in hand….only in the south.

I Am Actually Impressed….

Who would have thunk it?

Lots of businesses were closed this past Easter Sunday.  I found out the hard way.  After a great worship service at our place of worship on Sunday, my wife and I decided to go to Sam’s Club in Trussville, AL to take advantage of our new membership privileges.  We were off to purchase large quantities of Gatorade, paper towels, soap, water and toilet paper. (all for our secret war-time bunker) But much to our amazement, Sam’s was closed.  I was shocked and appalled.  The Pinnacle shopping center…closed.  Super Target…closed.  Buckle…closed.  Almost everything else…CLOSED.  We drove almost an hour and a half just to turn around and go back home.

But no…I refuse to return without getting out of my truck.

There were a few heathen, capitalistic sales venues actually open for business.

We visited Home Depot, Lowe’s….and of course the two entities set on world domination…Wal-Mart and Starbucks!  (We didn’t actually go to Starbucks.  My wife and I both hate coffee.  I just had to include them.  They’re everywhere.)

I wonder what kind of “hit” the other stores took for not being open.  You know it wasn’t long ago that no business were open on Sunday.  It wasn’t in my lifetime, but all humanity was not lost when the “Blue Law” was still in effect.  I have said many times I wish we still had that law.  It would be a bit of challenge to get used to that way of life again.  But I believe we could manage.  Chik-Fil-A seems to do OK.  They have a College Football Bowl Game for crying out loud.

I know, I know.  “Why did you go out looking to spend money?  Why weren’t you home with family?”  Well, I was with family and we were bored.  But, I think I am going to actually try not to go anywhere on Sunday anymore, except to church or to visit friends and family.  It may be a stretch, but I think it can be done.

To all merchandisers of the world….”You No Open On Sunday!”
